Lesson 33: Steamer on the Water (Color Drawing)

Practice drawing a margin line around your works this week as shown in the illustration. Teach the pupils how to draw a margin around their tablets using the second or long finger as a guide. The illustration shows the position of the hand. Many of the pupils will learn how to do this by seeing the teacher draw the margin, but others will have to be shown how by placing their hand and fingers in position. Practice drawing these margin lines until the pupil can draw them without much effort. Place a margin around the tablet as shown in the illustration, about half or three quarters of an inch from the outer edge.

To recreate the steamer drawing below, with a free, even stroke, wash in the sky, making it even and as smooth as possible. With a heavier stroke, wash in the water and smoke, and then with a still heavier stroke, wash in the boat. The plan is to make the sky a light even wash, the water and smoke a heavier wash, the boat heavier still. The horizon line in this drawing should be made with the aid of the ruler. This is the only ruled line in the book. The boat should be made small.

  1. Make the entire drawing with blue. Color the sky light. Sharpen the crayon and with a ruler draw the horizon line. Then with a sharpened crayon draw the boat and the smoke. Use a plain wash for the water.
  2. With a sharpened violet crayon, draw the horizon. Color the sky above this line with a strong wash of yellow, and the water with a strong wash of violet, blending the edges. Color the boat and smoke violet.
  3. With a sharpened blue crayon, mark the horizon line and color the water. Turn the paper around, and color the sky with a heavy wash of orange. Color the boat and smoke blue.
  4. Make the entire drawing with black.
  5. Make the entire drawing with violet.
